Phoenix Suns Playoff Tickets - Grant Hill Gets Another Shot At A Title
No one would have blamed Grant Hill if he had thrown in the towel years ago
. After taking the league by storm in the late '90s, Hill faced ruinous ankle injuries that threatened to end his career. Following a horrific stint with the Orlando Magic, in which he hardly played, Hill eventually landed in Phoenix, where little was expected of him. But Hill has far from mailed it in and instead has become one of the major reasons that the Phoenix Suns were able to secure the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Heading into the postseason, Hill is playing as well as he has since very early in his career - in a smaller role - and is in great position to help his team ascend to the Western Conference Finals, or perhaps even the NBA Finals.What is most impressive about Hill's resurgence, however, is the way he has assimilated to his team in the twilight of his career. Hill has always been a selfless player, particularly back in Detroit when he frequently was the top assist man for non-point guards. But with the Suns, Hill has been willing to be a small piece of the Suns offense, which is a terribly difficult task for a player of Hill's skill level and former greatness. While players like Allen Iverson would rather be the chief scorer on a horrible team, Hill has been happy playing for a winning team that each year goes to the playoffs, even though his scoring numbers are but a fragment of what they had been in prior years.
In a limited role, all Hill has done over the last couple of seasons is do the little things while Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire do the scoring and get a majority of the credit. When Nash and Stoudemire get rest or fall into foul trouble, however, the Suns rely on Hill for scoring and to help run the offense. Hill's mid-range game is still nearly as strong as it ever was and he has retained an uncanny ability of being able to push the ball when the opposing defense is late in transition. Though Hill isn't exactly dunking on players as he might have in his youth, he still can find a seam and take the ball to the hole with remarkable efficiency and hasn't given up his ability to pass the ball either.
What is perhaps even more impressive is the general shape he has kept himself in, which has allowed him to play in 161 out of 164 regular season games in the past two seasons. In Phoenix, Hill has established himself as a tough, team-oriented defender who can still get out in transition and play well in the fast-tempo Phoenix style of offense. Despite his ankle problems in the past, Hill also still rebounds very well and averaged 5.5 boards per game in just 30 minutes this past season. Though he may not be helping to sell Phoenix Suns Playoff tickets at the same rate he would have in his dominant career years, Suns fans shouldn't sleep on how valuable he is to their team.
Hill has long since stopped putting up the types of numbers that will turn heads among most basketball fans, yet he is a crucial piece for the Suns and will be fun to watch as Phoenix looks to challenge the top teams in the West and hope to reach the NBA Finals. No matter how dominant Nash and Stoudemire are, they certainly can't do it alone against deep teams like L.A., Dallas and Utah. For one of the true good guys in the NBA, one as selfless and team-oriented as there is in the league, this will likely be the last chance he will have to challenge for an NBA title. After the rollercoaster ride his career has been on thus far, no one deserves another shot more than Grant Hill.
