Pet Insurance for the Italian Greyhound

Not surprisingly, the Italian Greyhound originated in Italy, but unlike other small breed dogs, its job was not to hunt vermin or track wildlife. Its main job was to be a lap dog. These dogs can be dated back nearly 2,000 years ago, where it sat on the lap of its owners, providing companionship and simply looking pretty.

The breed was most popular during the reign of Queen Victoria in the 1800s and finally made their way to the United States later that same century.

These dogs are very sensitive and gentle dogs. While they do have spurts of energy, they prefer to spend their days resting under covers snuggled up to their owners. They are not a good fit for overly outgoing families with a rambunctious household, and because they have such thin legs, they are prone to leg fractures and other injuries. Pet insurance can help offset costs associated with treating leg fractures and other accidental injuries, which can run up to thousands of dollars to treat.

But these dogs are also very loyal and loving and once they find their family they adore them without measure. They only need a moderate walk or play session a day to stay happy and healthy.

They have short smooth coats that come in any color except brindle and black and tan. This coat requires minimal care, maybe an occasional brushing to get rid of dead hair. They stand between 13 inches and 15 inches tall and weigh between seven and 14 pounds.

Some of the most common health concerns associated with this breed are periodontal disease, the inflammation of the gums; epilepsy, a recurring seizure disorder; patellar luxation, a condition where the kneecap moves in and out of place; and progressive retinal atrophy, the gradual deterioration of the retina.

Pet insurance can also help with costs associated with treating these conditions. Pet insurance providers will reimburse pet owners a portion of the veterinary bill so that they do not have to make decisions based on how much money they are willing to spend, but on what is medically best for the health of the pet.
