Though we normally rely on veterinarians, who are professionals, to diagnose problems in our dogs, it is very possible for lay people such as us to do just this. Using a little common sense and paying attention to your dog go a long way. In no way is it implied that you will be able to diagnose every health ailment or disease out there, but you can easily recognize canine arthritis, as well as one other common health concern, hip dysplasia. Some of the common indicators of these ailments are limping, awkward or abnormal gait (walking pattern), problems getting up while lying or trouble lying down if he's been standing for a while. You may also notice that he is not as ready or willing to play with you as much, or he may not even want to go outside. Other common signs are that he falls behind when you take him walking, or he whines or tries to move when you try to pet or approach him. One effective method of both treating and preventing osteoarthritis in dogs is Glucosamine. If you really care about your dog, this item should be at the top of the list of supplements to buy for your pet. As with many things, people may be concerned that glucosamine for dogs is neither useful, nor proven effective. Some may think that it may not really work, but pet owners see the placebo effect and claim it is truly helpful. Although true in human studies, this proves false easily when dealing with dogs. The way that a placebo works is that a subject believes that they are being given a medication when they are in fact being given a benign substance, such as sugar. Not to be offensive to our four-legged friends, they simply do not have the psychological intelligence needed to understand such a system. It has been proven that dogs with arthritis that have been given glucosamine for dogs have shown positive improvements in activity and mood. This has to be the result of the supplement given (glucosamine), given all other variables in their lives were kept the same. One main component of bones, and specifically in synovial fluid as well as cartilage in the joints, is glucosamine. Cartilage acts as a buffer, or shock absorber in the joints. It cushions joints and keeps them from rubbing together, thus causing joint deterioration. As cartilage wears down, the bones actually rub against each other, causing arthritis. Hip dysplasia is an ailment that can be genetic in nature. The dog's hip joints are not formed normally, or in some cases, the connective tissues that hold the ball of the hip in place get "loose". This "loosening" can cause the hips to either fall out of place or bone to rub on bone, causing pain in the hips. Glucosamine for dogs can help ease your dog's arthritis pain. If you can't get your dog to swallow a pill, you may try to buy the liquid form of glucosamine. Liquids are much easier mixed with treats and food, or it may be mixed into peanut butter, which most dogs can't resist.
