During the surgery, the doctor makes use of a special instrument called a cannula. A cannula is a thin, hollow tube which can be hooked up to a vacuum device. The doctor inserts the tube into the fatty tissue of the buttock and then moves it back and forth to dislodge and suction out the unwanted fat.
After the surgery, there is typically a period of pain, bruising and swelling. However, the pain usually begins to diminish within the first week of surgery, and the bruising and swelling go down within the first few weeks. Patients can generally return to work within a few days, although they will want to take things easy for a little while.
Women considering liposuction of the buttocks are advised to first see if they can lose the excess fat through exercise and diet. This is easier on the body and it produces health benefits that lipoplasty cannot duplicate. However, if a woman is unable to lose the weight through other methods, lipoplasty can effectively help to sculpt and trim the area of the buttocks.
