At the center of the action, because he's in possession of this little shard left over from the first flick, is Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and his hottie girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox). They run, they trip in the dust, get dirty, get up and run again as computer screens filled with explosions light up behind them.
"Transformers: ROTF" couldn't exist in any age but a digital one, of course, but that's cool -- very cool, in fact. If you want explosions, followed by still more explosions, nobody's going to deliver like Michael Bay. The two college-aged guys who were seated next to me at my screening seemed to be having a grand, old time.
That's the picture's target demographic, of course, although 10-year-old boys will probably get just as much out of the movie.
As with Bay's initial foray into this franchise, it's extremely difficult to tell one machine from another here, although two Amos and Andy-esque Transformers certainly do leave an impression. They've been called racist by some in the critical community, and they probably are, but racism in "Transformers: ROTF" -- well, there are other battles worth fighting.
Leaving a positive impression is John Turturro, returning from the first film and seemingly having a better time than anyone else as Sector 7 agent Simmons.
Leaving the biggest impression of all is Megan Fox, who used the first "Transformers" to get her name out there. Now she's a star, or at least Bay wants you to think so.
The woman is certainly attractive, although why she needs to pout like she's posing for a centerfold every single time the camera is on her is doubtless a valid question.
"Transformers: ROTF" opens with Sam Witwicky going to college (for about 10 minutes), where literally every young woman on campus looks, dresses and acts like a stripper. Again, this is Michael Bay's world; we just laugh at it.
