Movie Review Of "up In The Air"

If you ever wondered what life would be like if you had a job that required you to

travel 95% of the time then you should watch Up in the Air, starring George Clooney. Here you have a character that has a job which entitles him to fire people from various companies where the supervisors there are too cowardly to do it themselves. What is interesting about Clooneys character is that not only does he not mind his job, but he enjoys it.

He enjoys the lifestyle of always being on the road, and not having any attachments such as friends and family. In his book, that would only weigh him down in his job. Despite his life of emotional disconnection with others, he does have one thing he is passionate about, reaching 10 million miles and receiving the ultimate frequent flyer credit card. His entire world changes when the company he works for brings everyone home and plans to get rid of all the traveling of the job. In order for Clooney to stay in the air, he must show a newbie, a young college graduate girl, the trade on the road. Little does he know that this small turn in events, changes everything.

I enjoy this movie because there is a deeper meaning in the plot at hand. We see various people being fired from their jobs and we cant help but feel sorry for them. Clooney, being desensitized since he sees this so often does not get emotional, but tells them this is what is best for you, now you can follow your dreams. While it is all bullshit for him, he soon realizes that this is true.

There is a strong statement here that family is what is important. It does not matter how much money you make or if you lose your job. At the end of the day, your family will be there for you. Not only are they there for you, but they are the only thing that really matters. What is sad is that many do not realize this until it is too late. At the end they have testimonials from people who lost their jobs earlier in the movie and all of them basically said they were happy. Although they had lost their jobs and they would struggle for a while, they were happy that they could spend more time with their loved ones and pursue the things they had always wanted to do. This is why I feel Up in the Air was a brilliant movie.
