Each year during the long Victorian Labour Day weekends in March, the normal city buzz of Melbourne erupts out in colourful revelry. Gigantic floats invade the streets along with marching bands and dancers, fireworks festivals light up the night sky, and even the Yaara River that flows by the city is invaded by dragon boats and the Birdman Rally. The Moomba Festival is Melbourne's much loved city carnival of which the name Moomba means 'get together and have fun' in the aborigine tongue. The initial idea of the Moomba Festival was formed in 1951 when Australia celebrated 50 years of federation at Melbourne, where the festivities included an attractive theatrical show called "An Aboriginal Moomba; Out of The Dark". Inspired by the show, the city council put forth a proposal for the festival, and the first Moomba invaded the streets of Melbourne in 1955. Nowadays the Moomba festival is a city attraction that draws in revellers form all over Australia and even the world.
In 2003, the festivities invaded the banks of the Yaara River and have since drawn the waterway into its celebrations as well. Once you get to Melbourne during the start of the Moomba, it's just so hard to figure out where to join in.
