Get "up close and personal" with whales in Margaret River Australia

What do Bali, Byron Bay and Margaret River WA have in common? All three of these places were first found by surfers and then became major tourist destinations in their own right. In the 1970s, a new generation of Australian surfers got itchy feet and started to explore the world, searching for the perfect wave. They discovered among the best waves in the world right here at home at Margaret River.

Located around 270 km (168 miles) from Perth on a wide peninsula that juts out into the Indian Ocean, Margaret River is open to all of the swells that are created by fierce storms far away at sea. These waves take shape as they approach the rough coastline, producing among the most sought after surfing breaks on the planet. As a result, for many years, Margaret River has played host to innumerable regional, national and international surfing contests.

While surfing may have been what introduced Margaret River into the public attention, it's the regions other attractions that have extended its charm to the broader vacation market. The locals have always been "hands on" types preferring home made to store bought. That's why when you go to a restaurant or cafe in Margaret River, you'll be treated to hand made gourmet delights and locally produced beers and wines.

It's a good thing there are so many cafes and restaurants serving mouth watering delicacies in Margaret River. You will want the fuel to keep you going as you explore the area. For people with plenty of time to spare and plenty of energy, you can get to Margaret River from Perth via the legendary Bibbulmun Track. That will be just the beginning of your journey, though. If you wish to join the elite group of 'end-to-enders', you'll need to walk its entire 965 km (600 miles). Most visitors to Margaret River are more than happy to limit their hiking on the Bibbulmun Track to shorter excursions, though.

Augusta, just over 40 km (25 miles) away from Margaret River, is well known the whale watchers capital of Australia. Augusta's Flinders Bay is where the whales come to breed over the winter months between June and September. Both Southern Right and Humpback whales come to Flinders Bay, which makes it among the few places in the world where you will get "up close and personal" with these remarkable marine giants.

Of course, you cannot leave Margaret River without at least going down and watching the world's finest surfers take on some of the world's most difficult waves. The most famous surfing spots in the area and the one where the international events are held is appropriately enough known as Surfer's Point. There are many of other legendary breaks in the area, too. Rottnest Island, some 16 kilometers off the coast, has an international reputation, as does the brutal Yallingup Reef.
