Although frequently referred to as post-rock, Mogwai have revealed in interviews that they despise this categorization, insisting that their sound bears little resemblance to pioneers of the genre, such as Tortoise.
The Mogwai's 2001 album "Rock Action" gave them their highest album chart placing, reaching No: 23. Mogwai's album "Mogwai Young Team" was listed as No: 97 on Pitchfork Media's Top 100 Albums of the 1990s. The album sold more than 30,000 copies in the UK. In 2006, Mogwai provided the soundtrack to the film Zidane. Mogwai's 2008 "Batcat" EP featured a collaboration with Roky Erickson, with Erickson providing vocals on "Devil Rides". Mogwai are also featured in the 2009 post-rock documentary Introspective. In 2010 Mogwai announced the release of their first live film, premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival in February 2010 and live album, "Special Moves". Both contain content from Mogwai's Brooklyn shows during their 2008 and 2009 American tour. Braithwaite also stated that the band were working on material for a new album for release in early 2011.
