V Australia Enters into Partnership with Etihad Airways

Virgin Blue is on a major revamping spree and has come out with certain major policy decisions

. One of its biggest steps has been the partnership of V Australia with Etihad Airways. V Australia is Virgin Blue's full service international arm. This partnership will be submitted to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for approval in due course. Here are some of the crucial angles related to the partnership.

The Major Highlights and Benefits of the Partnership

There would be a code share on all services from Abu Dhabi.

All Virgin Blue, V Australia, and Pacific Blue flights will have the EY code of Etihad.V Australia Enters into Partnership with Etihad Airways

In addition to the codeshare, by February 2011, V Australia would be operating three flights on a weekly basis from Sydney to Abu Dhabi as well as three weekly flights from Brisbane to Abu Dhabi by February 2012.

V Australia in partnership with Etihad would be covering more than 100 destinations from the current 65. At the start, there would be 27 flights between Abu Dhabi and Australia.

Passengers would be able to join Etihad's onward flights just by booking a single V Australia ticket.

Etihad's customers would be able to access as many as 45 additional destinations spread across Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Los Angeles in the US, and South Africa.

The various services of both the airlines will be integrated. For instance, Etihad Airways's frequent flyer programme, Etihad Guest would be merged with Virgin's Velocity. Lounge access and other ground services would be a part of the merger as well.

The merging of the different services hints towards the possibility or rather certainty that from 1st October, frequent flyer members of both airlines would be able to earn and redeem miles with either of the carriers.

Virgin Blue would get access to a global network spanning Asia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the UK.

Reasons behind the Partnership

The major reason behind the partnership is the result of the second stage of the network review carried out by Virgin Blue. As per the review, there is a need of overhauling the routes of V Australia besides rolling out the larger A330-200 aircraft on various routes between Perth and East Coast. The partnership takes into account the requirement for overhauling the route network.

Related Effects of the Partnership

The partnership means that Virgin Blue would serve new connections from Sydney and Brisbane to Abu Dhabi. Giving more preponderance to this partnership, Virgin Blue has decided to axe flights to Phuket and Johannesburg from February 2011. Instead, Pacific Blue services would be raised for Phuket. From 17th September, 2010, there would be three flights every week from Perth to Phuket instead of the present two.
