Do you know who your children are talking to online?
Do they know who they've added as a friend on their social networking profiles?
MEETSAFE - Our Aims

Share: MEETSAFE
is set to be more than just a website, we are looking to create a national
online verification database that will give you and your children more control
over who they are communicating with on Messenger, Yahoo, Facebook, Myspace,
Twitter etc.
MEETSAFE has the full support of Mr Bob Blizzard MP who has taken the proposal to The Home Office. We have been in discussions with the chief executive of CEOP
(Child Education and Online Protection agency) with guidance from the under
secretary of state Mr Alan Campbell MP. We are now awaiting international
agreement and contact with UKCCIS.
For more information, visit the website and find out how MEETSAFE can help protect your children online, and give you peace of mind. The website is soon to include
educational material for you, your children and teachers, that will help keep
your children safe now!
...MEETSAFE, Keep Safe.
How will it work?
With the use of MEETSAFE you will be able to register your children using the government portal. Using your supplied MEETSAFE ID number , they will then be able to request an 'online friends' ID number to verify they are who they have said
they are.
When someone registers on MEETSAFE, their details will be cross-referenced with the
Government database to make sure the registration is legitimate. All
information supplied will be handled on a secure Government website and not
available to any third parties. The Government will be the only people who will
maintain and monitor your details, using them only within the MEETSAFE system.
If this web site stops one child from placing themselves in danger, then it has been
worth the effort. We all have our part to play in keeping our children safe.
What is MeetSafe all about? This website will save
lives!
Social networking sites have been quoted as saying they are "the new town square".
This statement is absolutely true, according to the latest Ofcom report.
"Social networking sites are most popular with teenagers and young adults Ofcom
research shows that just over one fifth (22%) of adult internet users aged 16+
and Almost half (49%) of children aged 8-17 who use the internet have set up their
own profile on a social networking site. For adults, the likelihood of setting
up a profile is highest among 16-24 year olds (54%) and decreases with ages 25
and above"
The Ofcom Report on Social Networking 2 April 2008 is available online
Why Government Involvement?
MEETSAFE requires the support of the Government to administer the identity verification process. Because of the importance of this scheme, and the complexity with making MEETSAFE a reality, we will need to work closely with the Government to make sure MEETSAFE becomes legislation and required on all social networking and internet chat sites.
The MEETSAFE system will require the following facilities:
To verify, by means to bediscussed/researched, an individual is who they say they are, and assign them a MeetSafe ID.
To supply server space /resources within the government domain to house the verification process software and the portal front end.
To supply the man hours (resources) required to maintain this portal and its security.
Need
Time is running short for our children and young adults,
with social networking being the largest platform on earth to meet new people,
our younger generation is in more danger form abuse than ever and that's without
even leaving their bedrooms!
