The headlines may seem to be all about his famous wife Jennifer Lopez (who may or
may not appear as a judge on American Idol next season), but Marc Anthony is creating his own buzz by announcing plans to tour beginning in September. Anthony released his first album in over five years, Iconos (Icons), in May and will hit the road in September, opening his mini-tour at New York's iconic Madison Square Garden on Sept. 10. Fans can also get Marc Anthony tickets to see J-Lo's better half in Fairfax, Va.; Miami, Fla.; Orlando, Fla.; Atlantic City, N.J. and Rosemont, Ill.The fact that Anthony's tour clings to the East Coast may stem from the fact that he, his wife of six years, Jennifer Lopez, and their two-year-old twins Max and Emme, call a Long Island estate home. Iconos is Anthony's first album since 2004, with the exception of the soundtrack for the film El Cantante, the 2007 biopic about the life and deal of famous salsa singer Hector Lavoe (Anthony played Lavoe opposite Lopez).
"On average I take about three or four years to do an album," Anthony revealed to the New York Times in mid-June, when Iconos was enjoying its second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Latin music chart, adding that he narrowed down a batch of 600 songs to 45, eight of which made it onto the final record.
Iconos, a Spanish-language album, samples the romantic ballads that were popular while he grew up in the Washington housing project in East Harlem in the 1970s, like Jose Jose's "Almohada" and Jose Luis Perales' "Y Como Es El." Explaining his tradition of switching off between recordings albums in Spanish and English, Anthony told the Times, "I'm not a salsa singer who wants to sing in English, and I'm not this American kid who wants to sing Spanish. My thing is music, period."
Anthony worked on Iconos with producer, songwriter and arranger Julio Reyes, who told the Times, "These are the songs we all remember from our infancy onward because our parents listened to them constantly: passionate, emotional songs that we may not have fully understood back then. The challenge is to pay these songs respectful homage while inviting a younger audience to get to know them and feel the same about them as we do." In addition to covers, Iconos includes two new tracks: "A Quien Quiero Mentirle" and "Maldita Sea Mi Suerte."
Marc Anthony fans won't have to wait as long for his next release, as he told the New York Times that he is already working on a Spanish-language salsa album and an English record, which sees him collaborating with Clive David on cover versions of pop hits-Anthony recently recorded a duet with Mary J. Blige that will appear on the as-yet-untitled album. Not to be outdone by his multi-talented wife, Anthony will continue to hone his acting skills with an upcoming appearance in two episodes of the TNT medical drama HawthorRNe, starring one-half of another one of Hollywood's most powerful couples, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
