Dog Travel Safety

One thing that you can definitely say without much objection is that dogs love going on vacation and traveling with their families. Some breeds love it so much, that it would appear they were demanding this type of activity happening on a regular basis. Suffice it to say, if you and yours are taking a dog on a vacation for the first time, here are 5 precautions to take where traveling with your dog is concerned.

Always protect them from the heat no matter how cool it feels to humans, remember that leaving a dog inside of a vehicle could have some sad consequences. Even if you leave the windows open slightly for ventilation purposes, a car can heat up like an oven and kill your dog.

Make sure that they are safe and secure when the vehicle is on the road you wouldn't just let one of your children wander around out of their car seats and/or seat belt so why would you do that with your dog? There are a number of harnesses available on the market today that enable you to secure your dog by attaching them to their crates and the seat belts.

Keep them fed and hydrated even though you may be tempted to cut back a little while you are traveling, you should make sure that they get fed as often as when they are at home and have plenty of water to drink in or out of your vehicle.

Don't forget the leash whether you let them run around loose or not at home when you take them for a walk, you want to make sure that they are never off their dog leash and collars, unless they are in for the night with you. A primary rule of thumb to follow with dogs, when they are leash-trained, is that you never want to give them an opportunity to run from you when they are not in familiar surroundings.

If your dog is flying with you most baggage and cargo areas in the bellies of airplanes are not climate controlled and this can be dangerous as well as life-threatening to your dog. If you absolutely have to fly, schedule your vacation in the cooler months of spring or fall when the temperatures are not too cold or hot. Always use an airline approved pet carrier and dog travel gear for safety and comfort of your pet.

Although all of this may seem like common sense to most people, you would be surprised at the number of pets that perish in those airline baggage and cargo bays.
