Melbourne - ranking third with a rating of 97.5 (half a point behind Vancouver, Canada, which was first and 0.4 points behind second place Vienna, Austria), Melbourne is Australia's most liveable city in 2010 according to The Economist, something that both most residents and visitors would agree with.
Located in the state of Victoria, Melbourne is on the south coast of the state and aside from being the city in Victoria with the largest population, it is also the second largest city in terms of population in the whole of Australia.

Sydney - the capital of its state, New South Wales, Sydney is generally regarded as the most popular city in the whole of Australia and is in fact the largest, covering 4,689.1 square miles of Australia and the most populous, with a total population of over 4,500,000 people according to 2008 data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Responsible for a substantial amount of the 47,030 permanent settlers who made the move to the New South Wales state during the 2008 to 2009 immigration year, Sydney boasts everything anyone could ever want in a city, including some of the most famous attractions anywhere on earth.
Perth - situated on the other side of the country to Melbourne and Sydney, Perth is a continually growing city, with the Regional Population Growth report for 2008 to 2009 provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics explaining that Perth has continually grown above the accepted national average.
Over 180 years old, Perth was founded in 1829 and over the years has been known for various different feats, most notably in 1962 and 1998 when the majority of the city's residents turned on the lights in their houses for John Glenn, the American astronaut who was travelling overhead, first onboard Friendship 7 and 36 years later on the Space Shuttle.
Adelaide - ranked joint ninth with Perth on The Economist's 2010 list, Adelaide is located on the same south coastal stretch as Melbourne and Sydney and has a population of just under 1.3 million people.
Originally founded with the intention of being the capital city of Australia, the initial city designs can still be seen today, with Adelaide being designed around a simple grid system, but with masses of greenery both inside the city itself, as well as on the border.
