Planning A Move To Australia? Let's Take A Look At The Different Visa Options Available

If you've decided that you want to move to Australia

, whether it's for a 3 week holiday or for permanent residence, you need to have an Australian visa in place before you move. Whilst it is - in theory at least - possible to move without a visa, it's not only illegal, but you'd find it almost impossible to live in any part of the country.

Fortunately, Australia has one of the best immigration systems in the world and regularly issues hundreds of thousands of visas each year. In fact 12,030,973 visas were issued between 2008 to 2009.

Divided between settlers (158,091), long term residents returning (114,985), long term visitors arriving (389,299), short term visitors returning (5,827,573) and short term visitors arriving (5,541,094), these figures show just how generous and welcoming of a country Australia is.

If you are stuck on which visa to apply for, take a look at the following information which covers the 6 main types of visas that are available for a move to Australia.

1. Working Holiday - the most popular type of Australian visa, a Working Holiday visa allows for anyone between the ages of 18 and 31 to move to the country for up to 2 years and work and study (whilst there are some restrictions in place, you can generally work and study where you wish).

2. Travel - the visa that is required should you just want to take a short trip to Australia, you aren't allowed to work or study in any form on this visa, with the sole purpose of it allowing you to enjoy the country as a tourist.

3. Family - if you have close family already living in the country, then a Family visa may be the easiest way for you to move to Australia.

Usually a parent or grandparent, the relative would sponsor your visa application and state that for the first 2 years of your move, they would provide you with everything you needed to live, should you so need it.

4. Spouse - following along the same lines as a Family visa, a Spouse visa can be obtained if you are making a move to Australia to live with your partner, who is either an Australian national or a permanent citizen.

5. Skilled Worker - if you have a skill that is listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL), then a Skilled Worker visa could very well be the way forward for you.

The SOL is produced by the Australian Government and details all of the work skills that are currently in short supply, most notably medical professionals and various construction vocations.

6. Business - whereas a Skilled Worker visa allows you to work for an employer, a Business visa asks for you to develop an already established business outside of the country, in the country.

For example, if you were running your own clothing firm in the UK and wanted to move to Australia, you may be able to move on a Business visa if you were able to show that you could effectively move your business with you and that once setup, it would benefit the Australian economy.
