You'd think, with the brilliant imagination children have got, that they wouldn't ever become bored. Unfortunately, that isn't true, as we are all aware. In order to combat this why not research a couple of woodworking projects for children and get them involved in something that will challenge them whilst at the same time grow their self esteem and boost their confidence?
This is a great way for all the family to spend some time together and to teach your children the concepts of teamwork, planning, and preparation.
So what would make a good woodworking project for kids?
Well, it would need to be something pretty straightforward and easy, so frustration doesn't get the better of them. To hold the child's attention, it also needs to be quick.
Below are a few suggestions for your first woodworking project that you may like to try:
Bird House - this has the added advantage that once complete, it can be attached to a tree and can be enjoyed over and over again as birds are attracted to it.
Toolbox - a very simple project and great for the trainee carpenter or mechanic in the family. If you have some junior tools that can go in the toolbox then that's even better.
Bird Feeder - another easy project.
Jigsaw Puzzle - this is a super easy woodworking project and not only will the kids love marking out the shapes, to be cut out by the adult later, they will also enjoy drawing either patterns or pictures onto the puzzle.
Toy box - can you ever have enough toy boxes? You never know, having made their own toy box, they might actually be inclined to use it! There's a novel thought.

Having made the decision to undertake a woodworking project with the kids there are a few areas that need to be addressed.
Safety for everyone concerned with the project has to be the first priority. Not only for the children, but for the adults as well.
Make sure safety equipment is used at all times, especially safety glasses and ear defenders if necessary.
Most power tools should be operated by the adults within the group. Educate the children on what you're going to do with the tools but insist they stay a good distance from you whilst you carry out the work.I stated most tools because there are a couple of power tools that I am happy for children to use - under adult supervision of course! The youngest memebr of our family,Grace,sat with me for hours as I, literally, made her bed, just so she could use the powered screw driver.
Preparation, as well as safety, is essential to ensure the project can be completed in one go. In order to keep the kids attention, the woodworking project has to progress quickly through the necessary steps. You ensure then, that the children maintain interest and are keen to be involved in further woodworking projects.
