The European court recently ruled that it was illegal for insurance companies to discriminate on gender when calculating their insurance premiums, meaning that companies that previously rated young women as low risk drivers and thus charged them less now have to charge young women more.

In a recent poll of female drivers between the ages of 17 and 24 a staggering 35 percent of them said that if the premium they would have to pay was significantly increased , they would feel forced to drive uninsured. 12 percent of the 3000 women polled said an increase of 25 percent or more would force them to stop driving and many reported they would have to look for a second job to find enough money to be able to insure their vehicle.

The ruling from the European Court of Justice will, according to the Association of British Insurers cost female motorists under the age of 25 about 25 percent extra in car insurance premiums while male drivers under 25 will see a decrease in premiums of about 10 percent.

It remains to be seen what will actually happen and whether some drivers will chose to drive their car uninsured or whether they will be forced off the road completely. The ruling doesn't come into force until December 2012 so women motorists can still enjoy cheaper car insurance a while longer regardless of whether they're driving an expensive sports car or a low emission new Volvo.
