How to Save Money on Lunch

How to Save Money on Lunch

How can I save money on lunch? That's a question many people ask when they're handing over those well-earned bank notes at lunch time.

Here's the scenario: You have no food. You're also hungry. So yes, you have a problem. The local sandwich shop and the fast food restaurants are there to cater for that problem.

But that gives you a greater problem. All your well-earned cash is being spent on your lunch.

So let's look at the cost of a typical basic lunch:

- Ham sandwich: 2.40

- Packet of crisps: 60p

- A drink: 1.00

- Total cost: 4.00

Suppose, instead of going out to buy your lunch, you make it yourself.

Now I know what you're thinking that's going to take far too much time to prepare.

But it may not take as long as you think. In fact, it will probably take less time than walking or driving to the shop, queuing up to make your purchase, and walking or driving back. So in the end, you'll have more time to relax and do the things you want to do with your valuable free time.

So how could you go about making lunch?

You could prepare it in the morning before leaving for work. Or how about the night before? If kept refrigerated, it will still be fresh the next day. If you're the well organised type of person, why not prepare several days supply of sandwiches and freeze them!

How much would we save?

Let's look at our ham sandwich example. I've just taken a look at a supermarket's website, and obtained some typical prices.

A popular branded loaf costs 72p. With an average of 20 slices per loaf, each slice will cost 3.6p pence. That's a good start and there's enough bread to last the week.

Two packs of ham are selling for 3.00. Again, enough to last one week.

Going for sunflower spread, a 500ml tub will set you back 88p, and will be enough to spread over your sandwiches for several weeks. Let's assume it costs 5p per day.

A deal on three multi-packs of crisps costs 3.50 making the individual packs 20p each.

So let's look at our costs again:

- 4 slices of bread with spread: 20p

- Ham: 60p

- Packet of crisps: 20p

- Water (from the tap or water-cooler): free

- Total cost: 1.00

So by making our own lunch, typically we've saved 3.00 each day.

That's 15 over 5 days, which becomes a 60 saving over an average working month. Even allowing for holidays, in one year you will have saved around 700, simply by making your own lunch.

So why not start saving now. Prepare your own lunch. Add some variety. Throw in some healthy options. Be creative. Be adventurous. Save for something big.
