How To Have A Problem-free Relationship When Dating Someone With Children

As if dealing with internet dating and learning how to meet singles isn't hard enough

, as you get older you may find yourself in another situation that can be difficult to deal with - dating someone with children. Even for someone who is really good with kids, everything becomes different when you're dating their mom or dad. Here are a few things that are important to keep in mind and help your relationship with your boyfriend or girlfriend, as well as their children, go well:

-Honesty is the best policy. This saying works well in many different dating situations. For example, if you met this person through internet dating and their profile said nothing about them having children, and you don't find out this important detail until a couple dates in? Don't bother sticking around - they either hide major things or don't have their priorities straight. On the opposite side, if you know that you're not going to be able to handle becoming a step parent someday, don't waste your date's time.

-Don't push for too much, too soon. Children shouldn't be exposed to every person their parent dates, so you shouldn't be asking to meet them until your relationship is becoming serious. Be sensitive to the child's feelings. Sometimes that's not the fun thing to do, as it will mean little to no sleepovers, but it's important for the parent to set a good example, and for the child to feel comfortable in their own home. This is especially true if the parents are divorced; just because mom or dad is ready to get out there and meet singles doesn't mean the child is ready for it.

-Be respectful of the parent's relationship with their child. Are you the type of person who gets jealous when your girlfriend or boyfriend wants a night out on the town with their friends? If so, dating someone with children might not be for you. You'll need to be understanding of the fact that their children come first, and it's quite likely that your plans will sometimes have to be changed or cancelled if something comes up and they need their mom or dad. Even once you've met the child and you are becoming more comfortable around each other, you still need to make sure you're continuing to respect the relationship they have with their parents. That means it's not your place to discipline or comment on bad behaviour.

Following these tips can help the child and your significant other feel more secure as your relationship with both of them progresses. Stay kind, patient, and understanding - and good luck!
