Cumulative Rewards for Children
With the growing age of the children the rewards should be changed and they welcome the rewards which are less immediate and more abstract.
1- Star Charts
Using star charts is very handy to focus on any one particular behavior, which you want to be changed in your child. Remember, star charts are only useful for children who are older enough to understand the purpose of the stars. These are not useful for too young children.
1-1 The Behaviors to Target
You have to be focused, while targeting any of the behavior of child. The allocation of star system should be clear and easily comprehendible for a child. You can target the following behaviors with stars.
1- You can use stars for simple behaviors like brushing teeth, makes bed, or ready for school on time etc.
2- Stars are useful to use in bladder training. You have seen many children, who leave things too late. With star charts, you can encourage them for short periods of dryness. You can give them a star for every short period of dryness the whole day.
3- Some people often use stars for their bed wetter, it is handy in few cases but this method is not helpful in general to motivate your bed wetter.
4- For those who still soil their pants, star chart system can be very handy. A step by step process can be used to motivate your child to get of this behavior of soiling their pants.
2- The Token System
Token system is another form of cumulative rewards, which can be used effectively to develop certain behavior in your child. Token system can be used in so many ways. Token system is a well accepted technique that is useful to tackle big tasks.
2-1 Tokens in the Classroom
The children with Attention Deficit hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are usually poor in their focus in the class. They are unable to give proper attention to the teacher. You can use token to motivate these children. Remember, these children cannot focus in any way for loner period of time. Teacher has to divide the one long period into small, to say ten minute period. In each period the concentration of child will get a token. And attaining ten token will reward him a time on the computer.
2-2 Tokens and Car Travel
Tokens play an important role in resolving the typical issues between the children while traveling in a car like, he hit me, he is taking the entire place etc. you can use token system here. To say fifteen minutes of peace will pay them a reward in form of money or any other treat in the next coming fuel pump.
3- Points and Money
Using points or money can also be used as cumulative rewards. Points may represent any special treat. On fulfilling the task appropriately, they will get certain points or ten pence. On reaching certain points, they will payout with a special treat. Or with money they can buy a more needed item or toy.
Purist often objects the use of money as reward, but it can be used in a manageable way to develop good behavior in your child.
Every Child has their Worth
Understanding the psyche of your children is a big advantage for you as a parent. For you are the closest person to your child and nobody except you can develop a good behaving traits in a child. Remember, there is no reward bigger than parents' time, interest and appreciation.
