How To Discipline Your Child Using Rules And Boundaries

Why do children benefit from having rules to follow

?

Having a set of rules in your home helps to create boundaries that teach children correct behaviour. Children learn moral behaviour and learn what is acceptable and unacceptable by following rules.

How does a parent create rules?

It is a good idea for both the parents to get together and have a good discussion concerning their views on what the rules should be. They should agree to stand united and support each other so there is consistency. Any differences need to be worked through so the child does not play one parent off against the other.

What rules should the parents set?

The parents need to evaluate what is a reasonable level of behaviour to expect from their child. The rules should suit the child's level of understanding. The child should not be expected to behave in ways that are beyond their ability to comprehend. Do not make too many rules for them to follow. Too many rules at once may create tension in the household. Focus on the important issues. Behaviours that cause harm to themselves or others, such as spitting, biting, punching and pushing need to be addressed first. Once they are able to follow those rules correctly you can add more minor rules.

How should the rules be enforced?

The rules should be enforced with consistency. If you are not consistent then your child will not take your rules seriously. Do not give your child any opportunity to bend the rules. Have zero tolerance and stand firm. Reward your child with positive encouragement when they behave well.

I hope you have found the advice in this article useful and have success in creating a set of rules for your child to follow.
