How To Discipline Children - Tips For Parents And Child Carers

Disciplining a young child can often be a frustrating task

. This article offers parents and carers 5 tips to help them discipline a child.

What are the five rules for child discipline?

1: ConsistencyIt is very important to be consistent. If the child sees you are flexible with the rules, they will try and stretch them as much as possible. If both parents aren't backing each other up, the child will play one off the other. The carer also needs to follow the same rules as the parents.

2: BoundariesChildren need boundaries so that they know there are limits to what they can and cannot do. Without boundaries children can feel lost and lack control.

3: Praise and rewardsIf you praise and reward them for their good behaviour they will be encouraged to continue behaving well and following your rules. Praise and rewards can reinforce correct behaviour. However it is important not to overdo it and reward them too much as they should learn that they need to do what is expected of them without being rewarded.

4: WarningsChildren deserve a chance to correct their wrong behaviour, so it is good to give them a warning before punishing them. Keep them updated as to what they will be doing next so they have a chance to prepare themselves for the next activity.

5: RestraintA parent should set a good example and be calm and restrained at all times. It will benefit neither the child nor the parent if they are unable to control their feelings. Talking with a firm voice works much better than shouting.

I hope you have found this article useful and the tips help you overcome any frustrations you may have when disciplining a child.
