How To Discipline Your Child - Advice To Parents And Child Carers

If your child behaves in a way that you consider unacceptable and inappropriate it is important that you let them know that it will not be tolerated

. This article offers parents and carers some insights into child discipline.

When a child reaches the toddler development stage at about two and a half years, they become old enough to reason with and understand rules. Before this stage it is not really possible for them to understand your reasoning so any effort to discipline them before this point will most likely be in vain.

It is important to be firm and strong when enforcing rules and to take controlled action so they know that there are boundaries that they must conform to. If both parents agree on what behavior is acceptable and they hold a united front, there is much more chance they will succeed in disciplining the child. If they are not united, the child will try and play off each parent and probably get their way.

Consistency is the key, try not to chop and change the rules and always be firm, or they will not take the rules seriously. Act immediately if a situation demands you to enforce discipline. Toddlers and young children have a short attention span and so will not be able to link the discipline to their bad behavior if it occurs a period of time after the event.

Why to young children behave badly?

Most often it is a seeking for attention. They are trying to elicit a reaction from you and to be the center of attention. Another cause is often jealousy. A new sibling may trigger feelings of envy, especially if they lose attention and feel left out.

When should one not discipline a child?

There are a few occasions when one should refrain from disciplining a child and be a little lenient. If your child is ill, their mood may be affected and they cannot behave normally. If you are not sure who is at fault, give the child the benefit of the doubt. If they show remorse for their behavior.

If there are events in their lives that may be causing them upset, such as a divorce or new school. Lastly, if you one of the parents has already acted and disciplined the child, there is no benefit from doing it again a second time. I hope you have found these insights useful and they are helpful to you in your endeavors to discipline your child.
