Knowing how to find the purest and safest omega 3 fish oils is actually just as important as knowing how much omega 3 for youths and children is the optimal amount. The right dose

Let's deal with the right dose of omega 3 first. For children up to 8-10 years old, one 1000mg capsule a day is optimal while youths above this age will benefit from the daily adult dose of two.

These capsules should contain at least 50% omega 3 oils with a minimum of 270mg of DHA and 120mg of EPA fatty acids (more on them later).

Purity

Getting the purest and freshest oils is essential for youths and young children as their immune systems are immature and not able to deal with the toxins like mercury and dioxins. Many supplements are not distilled and contain traces of these toxins.

Mercury free oil is essential as it can cause behavioural problems and learning difficulties in children and can lead to more serious conditions later in life like dementia.

To ensure you get the purest ones, check they have been distilled as this process gets rid of all the harmful contaminants. Quality suppliers will also provide a CoA or Certificate of Analysis to show any levels of detectable contaminants and the batch the fish came from.

Getting the right omega 3 fats

It is crucial for youths and young children to get as much DHA fats as possible. The other main one called EPA is important but nowhere near as beneficial.

DHA helps to keep the brain healthy, improving behaviour, concentration and memory. It also holds the secret to fish oils powerful anti-inflammatory qualities that help to keep the heart healthy.

As I said earlier, look for at least 270mg of DHA in each 1000mg capsule or soft gel for the maximum benefits.

You will see that most supplements have far more EPA and very little DHA so check the labels carefully to see the individual levels. If they are not present, then avoid the oil.

You should also avoid any oil with an enteric coating or added flavouring as these tend to disguise the fact that the oil is rancid or stale. There is no need to use special omega 3 oils for youths or children as the adult ones are far better.
