Liverpool has a fascinating maritime history, stretching back hundreds of years. In 2004, several port areas were decreed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The six designated districts include famous landmarks like Pier Head, Albert Dock and William Brown Street. Together, they form the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, just a short distance from us at Holiday Inn Liverpool. The citys heritage status was further raised in 2008, when it was designated the European Capital of Culture.
However, the Liverpool Docks arent solely a well-preserved museum piece. Liverpool is still one of the UKs most important ports, handling over 32 million tonnes of cargo a year. The Port of Liverpool is also home to a number of shipping companies, including the Danish Maersk Line. The ambitious Liverpool Waters project is a plan to redevelop the city's northern docks at a cost of 5.5bn invested over 50 years.
Apart from the docks, commerce in Liverpool today is based around the service industries, retail, tourism, leisure and the arts. The city has a large number of music and theatrical venues, such as the newly built Liverpool Arena, which can house up to 11,000 people and is also an important conference venue.
The largest of Liverpools new developments is Liverpool One, a 1 billion redevelopment providing 42 acres of new commercial, residential, leisure and retail units. The Liverpool One shopping centre has placed the city among the top 5 in Britain for retail facilities. Several skyscrapers also decorate the skyline, the tallest of which is the impressive 140m West Tower, Liverpool's tallest building.
Liverpool is also the second most filmed city in the UK after London, with its iconic waterfront as much a feature of the city as the Beatles songbook.
