Harrogate was established as a spa town in the 17th century and together with Knaresborough forms a single urban settlement. Located in the attractive Nidd Valley, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, it has been a popular tourist destination for many years, drawing visitors from all over the world. Attractions include Harrogate Spa; the Pump Room museum; the Dales National Park; RHS Harlow Carr gardens, Betty's Tearooms, Mother Shiptons Wishing Well and Knaresborough Castle.

The Harrogate town motto is: Arx celebris fontibus, meaning a citadel famous for its springs." However, it should also have another one: a town famous for its meeting rooms, since Harrogate plays an important role in the exhibition and conference industry. The Harrogate International Conference Centre, next to which we at Holiday Inn are conveniently sited, is one of the largest conference venues in Europe and the third largest in the UK. Hosting numerous public exhibitions and trade fairs a year, it attracts at least 350,000 business visitors. Other notable conference venues include Harrogate Pavilions and the Great Yorkshire Showground, home of the Great Yorkshire Show.

Harrogate boasts a robust and varied economy. It has always attracted a large influx of visitors, who originally came for the health-giving benefits of the spa waters - though only the bravest would try those at the Royal Pump Rooms, still the strongest sulphur well in Europe, and today a museum.
