Groundwater Problem In Washington Terrace Creates Big Impact

For these residents, these terms give them a surge of optimism for searching a solution for an underground water problem which caused numerable disease in certain parts of the city for several years already.This grand project considers the architecture of an underwater drainage system which in the process becomes a storm drain is estimated to cost at $75,000. In building that system, it includes the installation of 15 inch pipes segments at a height greater than two feet below the basement level of homes in the area.
In the process, the open segments will then be bounded by a gravel envelope to let ground water bleed into the pipe. Supervised by a local state university student, the project also involves the installation of several kinds of measuring devices to determine the amount of water flowing through this underground pipe as well as the amount of surface water which is seeping into the ground.
An enormous lysimeter which appeared to be cylindrical in shape was put up in the city's Central Park. A cylindrical tank contains a another big tank filled with soil is buried beneath a layer of grass to imitate the layers wherein surface water must flow through before becoming part of the ground water flow.

When turf is drying up, the tensionmeter has already pulled the water out of the ground and now goes back to the soil. The high cost of these devices limits it from being installed in no more than four sets, which is why two sets will be placed in the city park and another two sets on a private residence study area. Tensionmeters prove their relevance when turf is in need of more water.
As a study of the uniformity and output of sprinklers, other tests will be included as to how residents, the city, and two different churches use their sprinklers. It is not yet confirmed that the surface water is the cause of the groundwater problem wherein the tests may precisely identify if only enough residents cooperate.
The underground drainage system primary results show that it aids in diminishing the groundwater problem in the area. When some residents back then pump water from their properties, they only receive little amounts until the installation of the system.
The drop of water tables went as much as 2.5 feet between the end of May and the middle of June, based on the studies. The leakage from its holding tanks plays an insignificant role to the groundwater situation according to another study.

The mayor suggested that subdividers be required to install this type of system in future land developments to help eliminate the problem because of the initial success of this underground drain which is able to handle both surface and subsurface water.
