Gwyneth Goes "Country"

The Goop queen has gone country: Gwyneth Paltrow

, the starlet who has recently been keeping only to her blog and the Iron Man franchise, might be back in a big way. The trailer for her new film "Country Strong" was just released, and if it is as successful as the trailer hopes it will be, Gwyneth could have a "Crazy Heart"-sized comeback in her future.

I mention "Crazy Heart" in particular, not only because Jeff Bridges' recent Oscar triumph was an epic comeback, but because Paltrow's "Country Strong" seems to be basically - to put it bluntly - the same exact thing.

The film follows Paltrow as a country star who has fallen from fame as her alcoholism takes over her life. Add a young threatening up-and-comer, a failing relationship, and a great performance and you have the makings of an Oscar-winner. But a "Crazy Heart" by any other name (Country Strong, for instance?) is still "Crazy Heart".

Since her win for "Shakespeare in Love" in 1998, her career has been a rollercoaster ride but a fun one nonetheless (remember "Shallow Hal"?) It's about time for her return to critical acclaim.

In addition to the film industry's love of comebacks and Cinderella tales, the world of country music is something ironically enthralling and foreign to the Academy. And seeing dear Gwyneth in full Shania Twain inspired hair and costume might be too much to resist.

"She even sings her own songs!" they will say in awe of Gwyneth in all of her teased-hair glory, and automatically hand her a nomination. Unless the film is terrible, of course.

Gwyneth, the queen of extravagant vacations and hoity-toity advice on her blog Goop, probably isn't the best choice to entertain the wider public - who are, let's say, actually country strong. The casting decision in general seems to be a bid for awards more so than wide acceptance, but in a particularly strong year of female lead performances, the movie has to be stunning and, more importantly, original.

Only time will tell how the film will play to any audiences whether country or Academy voters, and whether it really is just "Crazy Heart" 2.0. But until anyone actually sees the film, we can sit back and enjoy the promos, trying to guess which kinds of awesome Country Music Awards-inspired outfits she will be donning.
