While many of London's most famous sights and attractions are located within a relatively small area in the city centre and are easily reached by foot, the continuing expansion of the dynamic capital means visitors are increasingly heading to outer districts to track down the best new experiences. That's not to mention the task of getting into the City of London in the first place, whether you're arriving by plane, train or automobile.
If you do have the luxury of your own car, you should consider buying an A-Z street atlas a must, unless your vehicle is equipped with satellite navigation technology. Many of London's streets can be notoriously confusing to navigate, and unless you're equipped with 'The Knowledge,' you could run into trouble sooner than expected if relying only on your instincts.
Fortunately, London's public transport services do an excellent job of connecting all areas of the capital, and despite their occasional reputation among frustrated commuters, services such as the London Underground and the London bus system keep impeccable schedules the majority of the time. If you are heading to or from London's airports, you can also find frequent shuttle services getting you around in no time.
The Underground is the quickest way of getting around in London, and you should usually be able to find local stations that are convenient for your chosen destination, even when travelling some distance outside of the centre to areas such as Ruislip.
As well as being the world's oldest metro system - at 120 years and counting - the London Underground is also one of the largest, comprising 270 stations on 11 lines across 400 kilometres (250 miles) of track. More than one billion passengers take the Tube each year, and with the introduction of Oyster cards, paying for travel has become even more convenient for locals and visitors alike.
Your Oyster card discounts don't only apply to the Underground though, with the London bus system also being included under the Transport for London (TfL) banner. The bus network is a fine alternative to the Underground, with over 17,000 stops around the city meaning it's possible to get even closer to your final destination. Buses also have the advantage of running well into the night, unlike the Underground.
A little more expensive but ultimately more convenient, London's iconic black cabs offer a luxurious alternative - though you should be aware that taxi fares increase significantly at night and in certain areas of the city.
