A Global Positioning System is an effective tool to locate the exact location of a person or an object anywhere on the planet with the help of satellites and a receiver. The United States Military owns the Global Positioning system. It was opened for the use for civilians in the 1980s worldwide free of cost. Anybody who owns a GPS receiver can make use of the GPS services today. The GPS comprises three basic components.
It is a navigation system based on 24 satellites orbiting the Earth to form a network. This is the space segment of the GPS. Another segment is the control segment that functions to monitor and control these two dozen satellites in space. The third component of the GPS system is the receiver that functions to receive the signals sent from the satellite.
It is amazing to know that there is no limit to the number of receivers, which can be used together at the same time. It is common to find GPS receivers in mobile phones, laptops, palmtops, and ipods.
The use of GPS technology is progressing rapidly in India. It offers immense benefits in the areas of map guidance to the travelers on roads, hikers in dense forests, measurement of traveled distance by runner, surveying areas for printing maps, tracking of the goods in transit for export/import and many other fields. Receivers for the GPS today are small pocket friendly devices that may be inbuilt into other electronic gadgets for multiplicity of functions.

There are various GPS enabled mobile phones available in India that travelers can buy to ensure a safe trip within India.
GPS navigation systems are commonly found in most of the developed countries, they are still to spread its wings in India. It was not too long ago that physical maps were used here to locate the destinations and assess the distances. Offline route planning devices are helpful but real time route guiding softwares are preferable to the traveler. Locating restaurants, restrooms, hotels, or petrol pumps was never as easy as it is now, with the help of GPS.
