Although two or more characters might sound similar or exactly the same, the characters might have different meaning. For example, "xin" might have a meaning "new" or "a star". Therefore, you should focus on the meaning instead of how the name sounds like.

The first character is the family name. Since the Chinese culture is patriarchal, the family name is from the father's side. So, if you want to name your children, you first have to know your Chinese character family name. If you have Chinese ancestry, you might try to look it up on our family tree. If you do not have a Chinese background, you can use the meaning of your family name as the first character for your child's name.

The last two characters of a Chinese name make up the personal name for Chinese people. They also have an old tradition to give their children of the same generation the same second character. However, this is not a strict rule and people no longer abide by this anymore. If you still want to follow this tradition, you should assign different name for male and female.

Think about the characteristic or fate that you want your child to have. Chinese people usually use masculine characteristic such as strong, brave, and loyal to their sons. Their daughters usually have names that describe beauty and gentleness such as flowers, love, or kindness.
