Exciting Chinese New Year in Macau

Author: Naveen Marasinghe

Macau located by the side of the Pearl River Delta adjacent to the South China Sea is a special administrative region of the Peoples Republic of China. It possesses autonomy in many areas and has a flourishing economy based on industries such as electronics, textiles and toys along with a noteworthy tourist industry. These factors make Macau one of the wealthiest cities on the globe. The Portuguese were the first westerners to make an impact on Macau, establishing a trading post in the 16th century. Eventually after increased commercial and military activity in the area Macau was made an official colony of Portugal. After a series of treaties and agreements between China and Portugal and general unhappiness of the natives with Portuguese rule, Macau was finally made part of China in 1999. The Chinese New Year is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Macau, and it is the most significant Chinese festival for its people. Falling towards the end of January and the beginning of February in the western calendar, Chinese New Year takes place over 10 days of excitement and joy. On the first day of the celebrations most offices, shops and factories are closed. A great variety of events are conducted to celebrate the event. Dragon and lion dancers take to the streets in an impressive procession and crowds of devotees flock to the temples. Elaborate lanterns are constructed, flowers are arranged and a multitude of entertainers engage the crowds in the main squares of the city. People meet and acknowledge each other in the traditional manner, with the hands joined and closed. It is also customary to exchange red packets containing money, which is a way of wishing success and good luck in the coming year. Five days after the Chinese New Year the residents of Macau celebrate the Lantern Festival, which is the Chinese equivalent of Valentines Day. Desserts of small balls of sticky rice are prepared, representing good luck, friendship or a family reunion. One of the best luxury resort Macau is The Venetian Macau Resort Hotel. This sumptuous Macau hotel provides accommodation, dining and facilities of a premier standard, assuring a pleasurable stay for the visitor.About the Author:
