Easter Holidays in Valencia

The city of Valencia is situated on the eastern coast of Spain and is the capital of the Valencia region. Celebrations of all types are huge in the city and you can rest assured that visiting Valencia during the Easter period will not leave you disappointed so do not hesitate to book your Valencia accomodation! Just before Easter, Valencian's celebrate an important festival called Fallas, but this does not zap their energy for Holy Week that follows! Like all other areas in Spain, the Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebration is revered and many people flock to the larger cities, such as Valencia, to enjoy elaborate and noisy fiesta-style celebrations. That is why you have to book early your Valencia apartment.

Semana Santa is a tradition that dates back to Medieval times and much of what you see during the celebrations is known to have been around since at least the 17th century. Holy Week is a large task to organise and it is down to groups of men and women, known as Cofradias, to arrange all the events. One of the biggest tasks that they face is arranging the processions which wind their way through the streets. The processions are usually a solemn affair as they mainly depict the life and passion of Jesus Christ, in particular His last week here on Earth. There will be more than one procession, with at least one held every day during the week.

The processions generally follow a standard format and this applies to whether you are attending the celebration in Valencia City itself or those in towns and villages along the coast. Visitors are likely to find though that the celebrations held in the city are brighter and louder than those found in the small towns and villages of Spain.Easter Holidays in Valencia

The procession is made up of colourful floats that are carried by up to 30 men known as Costaleros, who wear cloth masks with eyeholes cut out of them. The floats carry beautifully detailed and well finished statues, scenes or symbols relating to the life and death of Jesus. Following on from the floats are men dressed in tunics, usually with brightly coloured pointed hoods, who are known as Nazarenos. Next, it is the turn of the Penitentes, who are usually bare-foot and may be shackled, carrying large crosses. Music is an important part of Semana Santa and it is not excluded from the processions, with musicians bringing up the rear of the line.

The processions, of course, are only part of the proceedings. Being a week-long festival, visitors on an Easter holiday in Valencia accommodation will be able to attend various events that are organised to make the celebration more attractive. Towards the end of Semana Santa, Valencia's celebrations include the fiesta of "Les Pascues". This festivity means that residents and visitors are encouraged to take to the streets and green areas to indulge in a picnic-style feast. It is traditional during this time to fly kites and eat a speciality food known as "la mona", essentially a boiled egg wrapped in pastry. And of course being in Valencia apartment you can be sure that there are firework displays included at some point during the week!
