Easter Holidays in Port Aventura, Salou
Situated between Barcelona and Valencia, on the eastern coast of Spain, is the resort of Salou. And one of the biggest attractions to be found in Salou, which has thousands of visitors every year, is the Port Aventura theme park. The park has been open since 1995 and celebrated its 15th birthday in style in 2010. Although the park receives more visitors during the summer months, those on a tight budget may find that they want to spend their Easter holiday in the area so that they can visit when it is less crowded and have Port Aventura tickets less expensive. Port Aventura is spilt into five themed areas, namely Mediterranea, Mexico, Polynesia, China and the Far West. The first area you will see when you enter the park is Mediterranea which only has a few rides but has a multitude of restaurants, resting areas and shops for visitors. The Far West is the biggest area in Port Aventura and has nine major rides as well as gentler rides for the smaller, younger visitors.
The area of Mexico, which is based on the ancient Mayan civilisation, is similar to The Far West but it has the wonderful Templo Del Fuego. This is a walk-through attraction which is bright, loud and colourful with actors performing amazing feats amongst dazzling pyrotechnic displays.
Polynesia is a more relaxed area in the theme park with a small selection of rides and a new 4D theatre which shows a selection of different films. Last but by no means least is China, which is home to the scariest ride in Port Aventura, Dragon Khan. Dragon Khan is not for the faint-hearted as it has 8 inversions and has held the record as being the rollercoaster with the tallest vertical loop in previous years.
As well as the great rides, attractions, restaurants and shops in Port Aventura, those visitors on an Easter holiday will find that there are great celebrations for Holy Week happening in and around the park. Holy Week (known across the country as Semana Santa) is a religious event that is celebrated all over Spain from Palm Sunday until Easter Monday. The highlight of Semana Santa is usually the processions which have floats covered in flowers and decorations as well as figures pertinent to the Life of Christ and The Bible.
These floats are carried by men known as Costaleros and are followed by men, women and children known as Nazarenos. The Nazarenos wear tunics and have brightly coloured pointed hoods over their heads. There is also music, dancing and eating during the Holy Week celebrations and visitors are always welcomed by the Spanish to join in. You do not have to be religious to attend these pertinent Easter events and passing up the opportunity to see one whilst on your Easter holiday will deprive you of a fundamental part of Spanish culture for your holidays in Port Aventura!
