Earthworm Jim HD Review: Still As Strange As it Was When You Were a Kid

When Earthworm Jim first hit the console market

, many kids tried to find the humor in the game while sifting through the cow tossing strangeness that the franchise has become famous for. Earthworm Jim HD takes that same old feeling and updates it with new features and, of course, drastically improved graphics for a rich plat forming experience. While still retaining the familiar 2D interface, Earthworm Jim HD presents true high definition graphics to remind current gamers of how great plat formers were in the past.

Graphics: 10.0 / 10.0

Gameloft took a lot of time making sure that the game was justified with HD graphics and it's obvious that they put a great deal of work into it. The environment looks rich and the color palette makes even a junk yard look great. All of the familiar enemies like the dogs and crows have the same attack patterns but have been updated with new animations. Even the details of the environment have been improved and each piece of the stages has received a serious graphical upgrade.

Game Play: 7.0 / 10.0

One of the major things that characterized Earthworm Jim in the past was its legendary difficulty. You'll still find that on Earthworm Jim HD as even the normal difficulty level can cause some fits and broken controllers. This game is tough. Be prepared to memorize enemy patterns and scratch your head a few times while making your way through the complex and challenging junk yard environment. There are also few control updates that can be an additional challenge for players not used to older games.

Story: 9.0 / 10.0

There really isn't a story to Earthworm Jim and adding one would probably have ruined the game. We've seen it in the past where classic plat forming games were subject to ridiculous stories that just wasted time and didn't fit. You are an earthworm businessman that suddenly receives a space suit from the sky. Following this, you travel through the galaxy to take on enemies guarding a princess. Pretty generic stuff but you can't really expect much more from Earthworm Jim.

Music: 8.0 / 10.0

New music is accented by remakes of the past music. The coolest aspect of the music in Earthworm Jim HD is that the music retains the same sound as the older game with slight updates. For the most part, the music in this game will sound a great deal like the original but cleaner and less disjunctive.

Replay Value: 8.0 / 10.0

It's hard to judge the replay value of a remake, especially if you have previously played the original. However, Earthworm Jim HD adds several bonus levels that add to the replay value and includes some levels that are set up for multiplayer gaming.

Overall Rating: 8.0 / 10.0

Earthworm Jim HD is a welcome update to an old classic that takes extra steps to make a good game rather than simply rehashing the older one. The improved graphics are not the only addition and the work that Gameloft put into the game is obvious. If you want to relive the days of old and want a weekend challenge, consider giving Earthworm Jim HD a try.
