Youngsters who visit Wansbeck General Hospital will benefit from a fundraising project designed to help the centre buy children's toys. Students at Northumberland College in Ashington showed their altruistic side by generating money for the cause, the Journal reports. Around 400 was made through a series of activities, which included a tombola, raffle, Easter egg hunt, cake sale and winter walk. A total of 17 people were involved in organising the charitable events and thanks to their efforts, children who attend the hospital will have access to even more kids' toys, potentially making their stays at the facility easier. The centre deals with people of a range of ages, from newborn babies to 15-year-olds, meaning patients' tastes in games vary significantly. Paediatric emergency nurse practitioner Susan Crossman stated: "We're always very grateful to people who donate money to the unit. We are constantly in need of funding for toys and equipment to make sure we can cater for children of all ages who spend time here." She added that those behind the initiative did "very well" and the cash they made will be used well. Meanwhile, college early years tutor Sharon Biggs noted that she is "really proud" of what the learners have achieved, pointing out that the children's unit provides vital services for the local community. Another facility that may need more children's toys is the Children's Hospital for Wales, which recently revealed that its resources are being stolen, Wales Online reports. Health bosses at the centre confirmed that toys had gone missing, many of which had been funded by donations to the Noah's Ark Appeal. Manager of the appeal Suzanne Mainwaring said staff are "dismayed" that play equipment is being stolen. She added: "Playrooms are so important for all of the children that use them whether it's for therapy, leisure or for educational purposes."
