Do's and Don'ts when Dealing with Asbestos

Do's and Don'ts when Dealing with Asbestos

Don't panic if you find asbestos in your home, but do put safety first when dealing with it.

DO make sure asbestos is correctly identified

Unless it has a warning label on it, it's not always easy to spot asbestos in the home. If you suspect that pipe lagging, insulation boards or some other material might contain asbestos it's safest to treat it as though it does until you have it checked by an expert. In many cases, the only certain way of identifying asbestos is through laboratory testing.

DON'T risk damaging asbestos

Asbestos is only a danger to health when tiny fibres become airborne and are breathed in. Never drill, saw, sand or deliberately break any material containing asbestos in case harmful dust is released. If there is a chance of asbestos being accidentally damaged, shield it with other materials or have it safely removed.

DO warn other people

If you know there is asbestos in your home point it out to anyone who might come into contact with it so they can take suitable precautions. This is especially important if you ask someone to do repairs or alterations.

DO check the rules

Some asbestos-containing materials are more hazardous, or more difficult to remove, than others. Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 only asbestos removal contractors who are licensed with the Health and Safety Executive are allowed to remove loose asbestos insulation, asbestos lagging, sprays, coatings, and some other types of material.

DON'T trust rogue traders

Anyone offering asbestos removal services must have a current licence issued by the HSE permitting them to do such work. If you are suspicious that someone might not be properly qualified or equipped to remove and dispose of asbestos safely, ask to see their licence and check their name on the HSE website.

DO get an online asbestos removal quote

Use a website that only deals with reputable licensed asbestos removal contractors to get competitive asbestos removal quotes which will save you time and money.
