Dictating A Courier Driver's Route

Dictating A Courier Driver's Route

It is sometimes interesting for a company to consider that advantages that they could

find in being able to dictate the route that their courier services are taking when making deliveries to their customers. This isn't something that is always going to be possible, and this is going to depend mostly on what shipping options you have taken with your courier company. When you're shipping something on an LTL (less than truck load) or on a scheduled delivery route, then almost always there are going to be several other companies that are going to be using the courier on the same route as your organization, meaning that the truck's route is going to be planned to offer the most efficiency in terms of the entire delivery load, not leaving much room for the courier to make accommodations for the specific routes requested by just one of those clients.

If you really need to dictate exactly where your courier is going to go, and in which order they are going to make your deliveries, then you should perhaps consider some of the different shipping options that are available to you. One of those would be shipping FTL (which means full truck load) shipping. This means that you have a cargo vehicle of some kind that is entirely dedicated to your own deliveries. The only problem with that option is that unless you can fill the whole truck, you can end up paying for a considerable amount of unused courier space.

Another option is to outright hire a driver from the courier company to come work exclusively for your organization. This can be a better option at times than hiring an FTL truck, because you can hire a driver with a smaller vehicle than those that are offered on an FTL shipping basis. That way, you can have smaller loads in your vehicle but have them making runs for you all day long in order to make sure that you can choose exactly how your deliveries are made.

Never overlook the option of using the services of the courier company to consult with you about the best way to make your deliveries. If you have good reason to request having your driver take a specific route, when consulting with your company you can possibly find a better way to achieve your delivery goals, without having to either ship FTL or find a dedicated courier.
