Cumbria Welcomes Tourists Despite Flooding

Cumbria Welcomes Tourists Despite Flooding

The Lake District, Cumbria is one of the UKs best-loved areas to visit

. The county, which encompasses the Lake District National Park, relies heavily on tourism to boost its economy and keep small businesses running.

Its been a rough few years for the county, with foot and mouth affecting the area in 2001, followed by another wave of floods in 2005. Cumbria, however, has proved resilient, and the countys response to Novembers flooding is no exception. Cumbria has received an outpouring of support in the form of both government aid and private donations.

Christmas and New Year are peak times in Cumbrias tourist calendar, and Cumbria Tourism is concerned that media coverage of the flooding will discourage visitors to the area. Cumbria Tourism has been eager to reassure visitors that local businesses are open and ready to receive visitors. The Lake District and Cumbria is a large and varied area and many areas have been unaffected by the recent flooding. Cumbria Tourism has set up a special visitor helpline on 01539 825070. Many tourist attractions are unaffected by the recent flooding, but where travel plans are affected, Cumbria Tourism will help arrange alternate accommodation.

Despite recent flooding, the Lake District has remained a favourite attraction among UK tourists. The Lake District was the only area in Britain to make it into the Lonely Planets top ten places to visit in 2010 and is one of the UKs best-known tourism brands. With its stunning mountains, valleys, and, of course, lakes ready to welcome admirers, the Lake District, Cumbria is definitely open for business.

Visitor information is available at www.golakes.co.uk or on the Visitor Helpline on 01539 825070. VisitBritain also hosts several videos on the Lake District at.
