Travel Along The California Coast
California has a wide assortment of beaches from to sunny crowded beaches with bikinis
and waves full of people to secluded, foggy, trackless coastlines.The southern part of California is very populated and this is where you will find a high population of people on the beaches. The areas around San Diego and Las Angeles are home to millions of people so most of the beaches are fairly popular and can be crowded, especially on the weekends. If you like to people watch and hang out at cafes, these beaches are great.
Some of the more trendy beaches such as Pacific Bach "PB" in San Diego are popular surf hang out where you can rent surf boards and boogie boards while you hang out on the beach.
Places like Venice Beach in L.A. are always full of colorful people and performers, body builders, bikinis and almost any other types of people you can imagine. Vendors line the walkways offering everything from Mexican blankets to ukuleles.
If you look around and find some of the more out secluded or harder to reach beaches you can find spots that are not so crowded and even experience the local wildlife. Also, if you plan your trips to the beach on the weekdays, you will usually see fewer people even on the more popular beaches.
As you head north along the California coast, there is less population and the beaches become much less crowded. In Northern California, it is possible to find secluded beaches and have them all to yourself. The population of Northern California is much less than Southern California, especially as you travel a couple of hours north of the Bay area.
Northern California seems like a whole different planet than most of southern California. The towns are much different and the economy is logging and fishing with most of the towns being small and rural. This is quite a contrast to the technological and tourist economy of the large southern cities.
Northern California is the land of the giant redwood trees, some over 300 feet tall with trunks as large as houses. The forests are usually very thick and dense. You can find some great hiking trails and picnic spots along most of the coastline forests. You can also see some rare and unique wildlife if you are lucky since the forests of Northern California are home to many different animals.
There is ample beach access in Northern California and much of it is state and federal parks, which usually offer good parking. Most of the parks and beach accesses are free of charge, but a few of the more popular ones do charge a small fee that is reasonable for the additional services and spectacular beaches you have access to.
