Create Lasting Memories With Your Children
When you first had your children, you probably heard countless people--strangers
and family members alike--prompt you to make the most of every day because kids grow up so quickly. Whether you realized that they were right at that time or you slowly came to grips with over the years, you now know that each day is precious.But how can you make better efforts to ensure that your children will have fond memories to hold onto as the years pass? Well, it's not as difficult as you might think. Let me share some tips and advice to help you create positive experiences that your children will not forget.
First and most importantly, you need to let your children know that they are your number one priority. This is so challenging in a world that diminishes the importance of family, but you need to remember that you could lose your job at any moment for virtually any reason under the sun. But do you really want to lose your family because of your job?
That doesn't mean that you can never respond to a call from work when you are at home or with your children. It does mean, however, that you need to designate time for them and only them. You might want to appropriate one night a week for games and ice cream with the little ones. During these nights, don't answer the phone or take guests.
Let those your colleagues--including your superiors--know that Mondays (or whichever day you happen to choose) is reserved for your kids, and you won't be disturbed. Then follow through and don't respond until you have fulfilled your obligation to your children.
If your schedule changes throughout the week, then consult your kids to choose a new night every week.
Take them to do fun things. Follow their hobbies and passions and show interest in them. Make it a point to get to Bobby's baseball game or to Sarah's recital. It will mean so much to them, and they will remember that you were there when it was important to them.
Record the memories you make. Always have a camera with you, even for seemingly insignificant events, and keep your pictures in a safe place so you never lose them. Be sure to take regular family portraits, and keep pictures of your children with you. Though they might seem embarrassed, it will secretly be a sign to them that you care.
It isn't possible to be a completely perfect parent. But if you devote time to them and show them that they are your priority, they will never forget the feeling of being loved--and that is most important.
