Choking Prevention For Children
Choking or suffocation may occur at any age and at any time although it is mostly common in children
. In the following short passage are a few things that families can do to prevent choking or suffocation especially in children. It is also a good idea to learn first aid for choking. Ask your doctor or health adviser about it and they may be able to recommend some resources.Choking causes asphyxia, or the loss of oxygen to the body. Prolonged asphyxia can cause collapsed lungs, infections like pneumonia, and permanent brain damage. If the obstruction is not removed, it can lead to death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, estimates that nonfood items caused 59% of fatal choking episodes in children ages 14 and under in 2000 alone.
Blinds and other window treatments that have the break away tassels at the end of the cord are safer because the end cap of the cord breaks away when pressure is applied unlike cords on older window treatments that do not break because they are looped. By having new blinds or shades installed will help prevent a child from becoming caught or tangled in the cords of a window blind or shade that can result in becoming strangled.
You should do a "house sweep" every single day and even a couple of times a day. Basically that means that you will do a walk through and pick up any items that fit in the palm of the babies' hand. Things like coins, small toys, balloons, and just about anything that is small and could be of danger to the child. This also includes any items from low table where your child can touch and grab especially if your child can pull up on the tables.
Pay special attention to choking hazards such as small food pieces and toy parts. Make sure that the toys you give your toddler do not have parts that can be bitten off and swallowed accidentally. In the same manner, watch out for toys with cords and strings as they can get to your child's neck and cause strangulation.
For babies under 6 months it is important to avoid sun exposure. Be sure to dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts and wide brimmed hats - cover the arms, legs and neck. Apply a small amount of sunscreen to any exposed skin such as the face, hands and back of the neck. If an infant becomes sunburned, apply cold compresses.
Each chair is filled with millions of tiny, pea-sized "beans" that can get everywhere. Many chairs were made of cheap materials that would rip easily, causing all these beans to spill out on the floor. Children would put these beans in their mouths, often choking on them. Other tragedies happened as well.
