Children are our future? Then let's keep them safe

Let's face it; each of us would do anything for our kids, especially when it comes to protecting them. Children's safety should always be the priority of parents, guardians and even people in the workplace, if that also involves children. But children have a tendency to find trouble wherever they go, those cheeky monkeys. That's why with the increasing dangers of the outside world, its important to educate them about safety precautions such as fire drills, about the potential dangers of strangers and how they may come to harm from regular household appliances.

Luckily for concerned parents or indeed for the safety education boards in schools there are organisations, mostly charities, which are dedicated to the distribution of educational materials so that children can understand these dangers easily. This is done by using realistic scenarios that children can understand and by using brightly coloured characters to present the danger. Another way in which the child can help understand the dangers is by including them through the usage of interaction, such as quizzes, puzzles or a what would you do?' type of test to educate them.

The range of topics available for the children to learn about is fairly widespread. There's a book about how to cope with fire, one about strangers, and as times seem to be moving on and younger people are being subjected to a lot more than we were when we were young, there are also books available explaining the dangers of substance abuse and even sexual interaction. However, these are more aimed at young teenagers rather than children. That said, they are still relevant to learn about at any age.

The charity CSEF (the Children's Safety Education Foundation) has been one of the most important charities championing the cause of children's safety and awareness and hopes to continue to do so, reducing the amount of money the NHS has to spend on unintentional injuries. Around 2 million children are admitted to Accident and Emergency wards due to accidents that could have easily been avoided had the child been more aware of the dangers around them. This passionate desire to help the future generations is something we should all have, whether we are parents or not.
