Child Safety Information - Know Your Facts
Children have a propensity for getting into stuff they shouldn't
. I remember as a child getting into my mom's makeup bag and pouring out her foundation all over the carpet. We all have stories of ourselves as children, or our children getting into things they shouldn't. Even though my mom's foundation wasn't exactly dangerous, there are plenty of other household items that can be extremely dangerous for children to get a hold of such as cleaning supplies.Children tend to test everything they touch out with their mouth as well just in case it tastes good. And who hasn't worried about their child falling down the stairs or hitting their head on hard surface?
You can help make your home safer for your children by following a few simple steps:
1.Move anything that could be potentially hazardous out of sight and out of reach. Don't just restrict yourself to things that are hazardous either. If you don't want your child getting their hands on it, keep it out of sight. They'll be happier because you won't be restricting them from something they want to explore if they don't even know it exists.
2.Be prepared. Read the product labels of all the chemicals in your home. Just because you don't think your child can get to it, they sometimes find surprisingly creative ways to get to things. Read the product labels and know how to administer the proper first aid for all the chemicals in your house. Also keep the Poison Control Center number for your area somewhere you can easily find it, like on your fridge. Keep ipecac on hand and keep it with your cleaning supplies, that way if it will be close by if your children get into the chemicals.
3.Help make your home fall friendly. Children fall, a lot. Especially when they're first learning the limits of their bodies. Keep child-proof gates on stairways, and have slip resistant mats on hard surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. Try to pad trafficked hard floors by covering them with rugs, but be mindful of corners which can trip children as well. Children will fall and they'll get scrapes and cuts, but try to make your home as friendly to the falls as possible and help prevent them as well.
4.Water safety. Now we all hear that we need to monitor our children in the bath tub, and sometimes that gets tedious as they love their bath toys and could play with them for hours. The warnings come with good reason, drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children. Keep an eye on your children, and eliminate hazards like standing water from your home. Keep buckets empty unless supervised, and don't let water sit in the tub unsupervised.
