Bruges Hotels: Your Springboard for Exploring World War One

Just about anyone who develops even the mildest interest in the Great War at some point feels drawn to visit the battlefields of the Western Front. It is difficult to pinpoint why the Great War of 1914-1918 continues to cast such a long shadow over later generations. Discover the stories, tragedy and bravery of the First World War Battlefields of the Somme and Flanders, just a stone's throw from many Brugeshotels.

Visit the Battlefields of Flandres - this was the main British battlefront in World War I where more than 250,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers died. Start at the preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood and see the museum, moving on to Tyne Cot Cemetery. In the afternoon, head to the Messines Ridge sector and the nearby Irish Peace Tower which commemorates the role of Irish troops from both North and South. At Ploegsteert, study the story of the Christmas Truce and see the Ploegsteert Memorial.

Ypres is best known as the site of three major battles of the First World War, the most famous being the Battle of Passchendaele from JulyNovember 1916. The many memorials and cemeteries of the fallen in and around Ypres draw thousands of visitors each year.

The Flanders region suffered from both world wars. In particular, it was the site of the western front trench warfare which lasted the entire duration of the First World War. The Flanders Fields museum gives an excellent overview of World War One. It is more like an experience that takes you right into the daily life during the war. A visit here will be an emotional day that will impact upon your memory for years to come.

Visitors to Paris hotels can also embark on a First World War journey. Paris was at the forefront of the war effort, having been spared a German invasion by the French and British victory at the First Battle of the Marne in 1914. In 19181919, it was the scene of Allied victory parades and peace negotiations. In the inter-war period Paris was famed for its cultural and artistic communities and its nightlife. The city became a gathering place of artists from around the world, from exiled Russian composer Stravinsky and Spanish painters Picasso and Dal to American writer Hemingway.

Head out onto the Arras battlefield to Monchy le Preux to look at the story of the lost' Royal Fusiliers. In Monchy see the Caribou memorial to the Newfoundland Regiment. Visit Vimy Ridge, starting at Notre Dame de Lorette, seeing the ground where a quarter of a million Frenchmen fell in 1915. In the afternoon, explore the Canadian attack on Vimy Ridge, seeing the memorial on Hill 145, before roaming back to your hotels for an evening of reflection.
