1: Find links to specified web pages of the competitor's site.

2. Don't include internal links: The internal linking structure of your competitor site could be useful if you want to get ideas about their marketing steps. Since we are more interested in external links here, we make our work simple by excluding internal links. To do this, you can type in the link: your-competitor.com or link domain: your-competitor.com.

3. Links from certain domains should be excluded: To exclude a large chunk of links from same domain, add site: thisdomain.com modifier to your search query. Links from this site will be replaced with new ones.

4. Check links from certain TLDs: The site: modifier will allow you to get links from domains with specified TLDs:.org,.com,.co,.uk or.edu. To give a list of gov sites linking to your competitor's site, type in link: http://www.your-competitor.com site:.gov or linkdomain:our-competitor.com site:.gov

5. Links from certain TLDs should be excluded: To exclude links from certain TLDs, use the site: tld modifier. Since most of the chunk links come fro.com, add a - site.com modifier to get new link data.

6. Combine the five tricks in different ways:

Check link: http://www.your-competitor.com/page.html-site:your-competitor.com-site:.com or link: http://www.your-competitor.com site:.org-site: wikipedia.org.

7. The above six tips could be used in different search engines.

Your search should not be limited to Google and Yahoo. Also, search Alexa and Alta Vista. Forget about Bings since it does not give link data. You can as well check Excite and Exalead.

Save time and get quicker result

These tips require a lot of hard work. And getting the links is just the beginning and the least demanding aspect of competitive link research. Each link has to be analyzed, poor quality sites removed and good quality sites left to get links from.

- Other data such as, TLDs, domain age, country e.t.c.
