Events

A good time to be in Ganapatipule and take part in the celebrations is during Ganesh Chaturthi which typically occurs in August/September. During Ganesh Chaturthi festival, th idol of Ganesh is taken out of the temple accompanied by a pujari or priest and a drummer.

Night Out

One can sample traditional Maharashtrian food at the eating places in Ganpatipule. Traditionally the locals served home cooked food to all the weary pilgrims that visited the temple here and this ritual was encouraged and promoted by the Maharaja of Baroda who would reimburse the people for their

efforts in serving the pilgrims. Today of course that doesnt happen, but even today the hospitality of the residents of Ganapatipule is hard to beat. Besides the fish curry and the kokam curry that the Konkan coast is known for, try the sabudana khichidi and the sweet modaks that they serve here. The delicacies of Ganpatipule include ambapoli which are basically pancakes made of dried and crushed mangoes and phanspoli which are dried and crushed jackfruit. Be sure to sample the ''hapus'' mangos that this region is well known for.

The temple of Swayambhu Ganesh is 400 years old and much frequented by thousands of pilgrims every year who flock to pay obeisance to the Swayambhu Ganpati shrine which is naturally formed said to have been carved out of one single rock. This temple holds the Swayambhu Ganpati shrine,

which is believed to have been formed of it own. The deity is considered to be the Paschim Dwardevta (Protector of the West), and those who visit Ganapatipule, normally make it a point to pay their respects at this temple. Most people come to Ganpatipule to spend time on its pristine beaches and paddle the clear waters. Here, you can leave the hectic world behind as you laze around on golden sands or explore the many trails that lead from the beach.

There is no airport here. Ganpatipule is 375 km away from Mumbai, the closest metro with an international airport. Kolhapur is the closest airport at 144 kms.

How to get there by Rail

If you are coming from Mumbai, board the magnificent Konkan Railway from Mumbai''s Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus). Disembark at Sangameshwar and take a bus to Ganpatipule. The nearest railway station top ganapatipule is Bhoke, though it maybe b better to go to Ratnagiri as there

will be more rail connections to Ratnagiri.

How to get there by Bus

The scenioc drive from Mumbai to Ganapatipule (via Mahad) is 375 kms. Ganpatipule is 30 km off the Mumbai-Goa Highway, and 50 kms short of Ratnagiri.

Best time to Visit

Though winter is the touristy time to get to most beaches in India, Ganpatipule can be spectacular during the monsoons and just after the monsoons (June to October).

to the poet which you could visit. Ratnagiri lies 25 km away from Ganapatipule and well worth a visit. Apart from being renowned for being the Alphonso mango growing district, the town of Ratnagiri has a historical significance and as legend has it, this is the place where the Pandavas settled. The main attractions here are the Thibaw Palace, which is where the last king of Burma Thibaw was confined by the British in 1885. Thibaw Point is a popular spot as it provides panoramic views of the surrounding area. While in Ratnagiri, be sure to visit the memorial to Lok Manya Tilak one of India''s greatest freedom fighters. The locals are very proud of their heritage and maintain his memorial in pristine condition. The Patit Pawan mandir in Ratnagiri is well known for being the first temple built for non-Brahmins by the radical leader, Veer Savarkar. Jaigadh Fort bulit in the 17th century is just 35 kms away from Ganapatipule. Standing tall just above the confluence where the Sangameshwar river meets the Arabian Sea, the fort is is precariously perched on a cliff and offers sweeping views of the sea below.
