Some Denver Waterways Too Contaminated For Safe Summer Play

It's a problem that affects almost all cities and towns that have waterways running through them

. Two water ways, the South Platte River and the Cherry Creek, that meander through Denver have elevated levels of several toxins that could make swimmers and bathers sick and possibly cause health problems in the future. E. coli, Arsenic, Ammonia, and Selenium have been found to be up to 50 times higher than health safety standards. Even though health officials have posted signs warning of the danger residents will still swim or recreate in the contaminated water.

The water quality of these two waterways is generally superior until they enter the Denver metropolitan area. Much of these pollutants end up in the waterways from industrial dumping, runoff from surrounding terrain and roadways, leaking sewer system, and geese. Some of the health issues associated with these contaminants are E. coli causes abdominal cramping, diarrhea, nausea and in severe cases even death.

Arsenic causes deteriorated motor coordination, respiratory diseases and kidney damage, Selenium is associated loss of hair or fingernails, numbness and circulation problems. But one of the major problems is that the health problems that these contaminants cause also mimic other health issues so most people will not understand what is causing their sickness. In the case of Arsenic and Selenium these toxic heavy metals build up over time and heavy metals are rarely thought of as a cause of health problems unless there is an acute poisoning.

While it is nice that the Denver mayor has a push to clean up these polluted water ways and the EPA says it has plans in place that can help cities identify pollutants and hone cleanup plans, it really is up to the citizens to take action. We need to prohibit any dumping of wastes by business and stop using chemicals that can get washed into our water supply and contaminate it.
