Ball pythons, Python regius, are natives in Central and Western Africa

. They are crepuscular creatures, meaning to say they can roam around during dawn an dusk. This particular specie do love to roam both in lands and in trees.

Royal pythons are their known name in Europe while ball python in the United States. Their name primarily came from the thought of their character that whenever they feel nervous, they actually turn into a ball-like shape with their heads pulled firmly in the center. Their average size is 4 feet in length though there is this record of specimen which reaches 5 feet. Females tend to be bigger than the males. They also got bigger heads than the males too. Their skin is smooth and have stocky body. Both sexes have anal spurs,though the males have larger ones.

Normally, their skin color pattern is black or dark brown with with light brown or or gold sides and dorsal blotches. However, with their popular trend in the pet trade, there are many color patterns as of now for ball python due to captive genetic mutation.

Base on the above information, I know it sounds pretty amazing. If you are attracted to buy such specie, then you might want to know some basic stuff on how to raise a ball python efficiently. First thing to consider is the selection of a good snake. Of course, if you'll buy snake you must check some of the qualities of a good snake such as firm and rounded body with clear vent and eyes, and most especially, it must be flicking its tongue on the air actively. When touching the snake for the first time, it might feel nervous and pull its head away from your hands. This is just normal. Secondly, the enclosure which must be appropriate for the size of you snake and be a tight one. A young ball python may require a 20 gallon tank while an adult may fit in a 30 gallon tank. For the substrate, you can use paper towels but always bare it in your mind to avoid pine and aspen shaving since your snake might ingest the substrate when eating. There must be at least one hiding place inside the enclosure. You can have an empty cardboard box or a half-log. The next thing to consider is the temperature which is very important in raising a snake considering the fact that they cannot regulate their own body temperature which may affect their health. Air temperature ambient must range from 80-85F during the day while 90F during the night. You can also use heating pads inside the enclosure as a mean for additional heat source. Having this thing can help you raise the air temperature as much as 20 degrees higher. The next thing to consider will be all about their foods. The hatchling can be fed with a 10-day old fuzzy. As they grow, of course they will need a bigger size prey. For their water, you can have a bowl where your snake can drink its water there at the same time can soak itself in the bowl. If there is any symptom that your snake has an illness, don't hesitate to call a reptile vet as soon as possible.
