Rugby Versus American Football
American football is a contact sport between two teams of eleven players each
, with an unlimited number of substitutions. It is a game of intense physical play combined with complex tactics in order to score points by having the ball on the opposing teams end zone.On the other hand, rugby football is a combination of the physical contact of American football, the running of soccer, and the play transition of basketball. It is a sport played by two opposing teams with fifteen players each and played on a rectangular field with the objective to run with an oval ball across the opponent teams goal line or kicking it through the goal posts.
On American football, each team has eleven players on the field at a time, but allotted with unlimited number of substitutions. Both teams get three time outs per half. The game begins with a kickoff, where both teams line up opposite to each other. Receiving player may run with the ball or may pass it. Each team has to advance the ball at least ten yards within four downs. If failed to do so, the opposing team grabs the chance. If they succeed, they get four new tries to move the ball another ten yards. The main objective is to score points by advancing the leather oval-shaped ball into the opponents end zone.
But in rugby games, both teams consist of fifteen players, divided into backs and forwards. Backs are usually the more agile, nimbler and ball-handling skilled players of the team, while the forwards are often larger and stronger players to win ball possession. The match begins with a kickoff and both teams contest for ball possession. The player of the ball-possessing team may run with the ball, kick it, or pass it to other players beside or behind him. Player of the opposing team can tackle the ball carrier anytime. Other that tackling, scrimmages, rucks, mauls and lineouts, no other physical contact is permitted. Even tackles that can severely hurt any player are strictly penalized. Once tackled, the carrier must release the ball immediately so the game can continue. After each try, the scoring team has the chance to score two more points with a conversion.
Like the rules, the field and equipment for each sport also differs. American football is played on a rectangular field of one hundred and twenty yards long by fifty three and a third wide. A rugby league field is somewhat very similar to that of American football, with also a hundred and twenty meters long and about sixty eight yards wide. There are lines across the field every ten meters. As for the equipment used, there is a lack of full protective equipments in rugby games, such as head guard and padding, unlike American football. The lack of equipment also lacks in womens rugby league but with a little tolerance of fabric guards.
And as for the geographical differences, the American football is played in North America, apparently while rugby games are played across the globe, especially in Europe and Australia.
